Just as you were about to speak Shouto spoke first.
“Would you like to go on the Ferris wheel Y/N?” Shouto asked as he prepared to eat another mouthful of his cold soba.
“YES!” You said, a little too enthusiastically, your mind quickly switching out from your thoughts about confessing. “Ferris wheels are nice, I like Ferris wheels, they’re so… wheel like…”
If you could have slapped yourself right there and then, you would have, for sounding so stupid.
Shouto didn’t notice your nervousness and just nodded in agreement.
“Bless this adorable man and his amazing ass.” You thought with a sigh as you finished the last of your food.
Once you both had finished eating Shouto led the way to the Ferris wheel and you lined up to hop on.
You looked around and noticed that the people lining up mostly seemed to be couples and you glanced at Shouto.
“If only we could be a couple too…” You thought.
The gate man took the tickets from Shouto that he had bought earlier and you two hopped into the small carriage, ready for the ride.
“My apologies Y/N, this carriage is a little small.” Shouto said as his knees bumped yours.
You had naturally sat on the chairs either side of the carriage, facing each other.
“Don’t worry about it.” You replied with a polite laugh, “it’s fine.”
“Come and sit next to me.” Shouto said in his even toned voice after thinking for a second, then immediately hung his head in embarrassment, his red and white fringe swaying gently in the night breeze.
You smiled at his bashfulness and obeyed, moving seats so you were sitting next to him.
“Oh hey look, my knees can see the view now.” You commented stupidly, trying to make a joke about the fact that there was nothing in front of your knees now that you had moved to beside Shouto.
“Knees don’t have eyes?” Shouto said, hesitantly looking at you with confusion written all over his face.
“Maybe yours don’t but mine do!” You said proudly.
Shouto looked bewildered.
“Hey well at least I’ve broken the awkwardness with my own weirdness.” You praised internally.
Just then the cable car swung a bit as it started to move and reflexively you grabbed onto Shouto.
“Are you ok Y/N?” He asked, wrapping his right arm protectively around your shoulders.
“Ah…yeah I’m-.” You looked at him, his heterochromic eyes glinting in the moonlight as he gazed gently at you. “…fine.” You sighed.
You remained frozen in place, looking up at him, both your faces, inches apart.
Slowly you leaned in and he did too, you felt his left hand gently touch your knee and you hesitated as the sudden realization, that you two might be about to kiss, set in.
He paused and cleared his throat as he pulled back and looked away.
“A-are you ok?” He asked without looking at you.
“I’m good. Why?” You asked.
Meanwhile internally… “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.”
“You just pulled a face that’s all.” Shouto replied.
“Did I? Sorry.” You deadpanned. “Was he about to kiss me? It felt like he was about to kiss me…”
“Y/N… there’s something I need to tell you…” he said softly as he took his hand from your knee and scratched the back of his neck, still with his right arm around your shoulders and still avoiding eye contact. “We have been friends for a long time…”
Your heart skipped a beat.
“IS THIS A CONFESSION?! IS THIS THE CONFESSION?!”
“I….” he looked back at you and reached out for your hand with his left hand.
Your heart started racing.
He opened his mouth and you could see his lips moving but a sudden explosion of bright colour behind him drew your attention.
“FIREWORKS!” You screamed in a panic, the sheer suspense you were feeling towards Shouto being channeled into your voice as you yelled.
Shouto looked behind him as more fireworks exploded.
You looked at the back of his head as he watched the fireworks. “Did he just get cockblocked by fireworks?”
After a few minutes the fireworks finished and he looked back at you.
“You were saying…?” You prompted him. “I’m sorry I missed a bit because the fireworks cut you off.”
“Oh! Which part did you hear up to?” He asked.
“The part about us being friends for a long time…” you repeated.
“Yes… well… I was wondering if…you-.”
“Ok you two.” The Ferris wheel operator said suddenly from behind Shouto. 19
“Eh?” You said, confused.
You looked past Shouto and realized your ride had finished and the attendant had opened your cable car door and was waiting for you both to exit.
“Oh! Sorry!” You said sheepishly.
Shouto removed his arm from around your shoulders and turned to hop out of the carriage. Sad girl days set in the minute he removed his arm.
You politely thanked the attendant and left, walking down the stall aisles again, heading for another attraction, all the while aggressively flipping the attendant the bird in your mind.
Not knowing whether you should push Sho for the rest of his sentence or not you decided to let him speak in his own time but waiting for it was killing you slowly from the inside out. Shouto had gone very quiet by now and was just happy to walk side by side with you.
At the end of the night you were walking home and he reached for your hand again.
He halted you.
“Y/N, I need to finish what I was saying earlier…” he said lowly as his eyes met yours.
You swallowed thickly and your heart skipped a beat.
“Yes?” You whispered nervously.
“Would you consider being m-.”
The roar of a truck going past drowned out the rest of his words for the third time that night and you screamed internally as the truck continued on down the road.
“I’m going to find that driver and cut his dick off then replace it with a balloon and shove a pipe up his a-.”
“Y/N?” Shouto asked softly, moving his head into your line of sight.
“SHIT SORRY!” You yelped, “I was just murdering someone I MEAN, WHAT?” You laughed in a panic. “Sho, I’m so sorry I have to go.” You said quickly as you pulled your hand away from his and bolted down the road. “Why am I running?! Why am I running?? Fuck I’m so embarrassed! I didn’t even let him finish, why?! I’m so stupid!”
Shouto watched you go, his hand outstretched after you as if to reach for your retreating form.
“Maybe I was too forward? Does she not feel the same way about me?… has she fallen for Dabi?”
He let his hand fall to his side and his head hang.
“Maybe she did hear me and that’s her way of rejecting me?”
