With your father behind bars you focused on your first day at work.
Monday had come and you busied yourself making breakfast as Hawks hovered ominously behind you, following you back and forth as your mind fretted over all the possible things that could go wrong on your first day.
After turning around and bumping into him for a third time that morning you finally acknowledged he was there and looked up at him.
“Oh hey, you’re back.” He said with a chuckle as he let his feet hit the ground. “Lost you to your thoughts for a bit there.”
“O-oh sorry I’m just… nervous…” you said softly as you looked at the floor.
“I thought you were excited, chicken, why all of a sudden nervous?” He asked as he walked over and sat down on the chair, slinging an arm across the backrest.
“Well I was excited but now that the day has actually come I’m worried I’m gonna stuff up somehow.” You said sadly.
“What could go wrong?” He asked.
“I could accidentally put a book back that’s laced with drugs and I get it on my hands and the police come in a test me for drugs and I come up positive and they take me to the station and lock me up with my dad and I suffer in jail for all eternity.” You replied, as quick as a flash, coming up with the most wildly irrational fear your brain had thrown at you that morning.
Hawks could see the stress on your face and decided to play the same card that you had put down instead of dismissing your fear.
“Well, when you get picked up by the police, they let you have one call; so call me, say ‘daddy come and save me’ and I’ll say ‘sure thing baby’ and I’ll fly down there, bust the door down and whisk you away while I let Brian get in there with his pride flag and smack them with it.” He said with a smile.
You snorted and slapped a hand over your nose and mouth, imagining a very hyped up Brian getting amongst the police and wrecking havoc.
Having a little giggle calmed you down and you walked over to Hawks, standing between his legs as he looked up at you.
“Thanks daddy.” You said softly with a smile.
“Mmmmm.” He purred as he looked up at you, rubbing his chin thoughtfully, “you know? I think you’d better stay home with me today.”
“Why?” You asked confused.
“Because daddy needs to be ridden.” He growled as he grabbed you around the waist and strolled off towards the bedroom.
You screamed playfully and fought to get free, all your fears about the first day at the new job, forgotten.
After Hawks had, ahem, relaxed you, he helped you into town for your first shift.
“Hey chicken, just keep an eye out for any suspicious looking men and remember to only answer to A/N.” Hawks whispered to you, reminding you of your undercover status. “I have a little more work to do today but I’ll definitely pop in to see how you’re doing.” He said as he pulled back from giving you a kiss on your neck.
You nodded and smiled.
“I will.” You replied. “Good luck today.”
“You too baby, I’ll see you later.” he said as he stepped back and shot straight up into the sky.
You smiled and turned towards the library doors and pushed them open, walking in to start your first day.
“Good morning A/N!” Your new boss said as you walked into the office and headed to the lockers in the corner.
“Hi Mr Bofa.” You said softly with a smile.
“Would you mind shelving these books?” He asked as he pointed to a trolley by the door that was laden with all kinds of reading materials.
“Sure.” You said with a smile.
He pointed out the codes on the spines of the books so you knew where each one went and you happily pushed the trolley out into the library.
“Oh and A/N, if anyone asks where something is and you don’t know, just tell them it’s your first day and then come and get me and I’ll help.” He said in a friendly voice.
“Thank you.” You said gratefully as you headed out of the office door with the trolley.
“It’s my first day, it’s my first day, sorry it’s my first day.” You repeated internally, practicing it so it would come out right when someone asked you.
You were almost expecting to be bombarded with questions the minute you stepped out into the library; and braced for people to come up to you, but no one did.
The library was practically empty except for 2 school girls, a lady with dark glasses on and an old man who was asleep in an armchair with the book on his lap.
You smiled as you passed the old guy who was out cold in the armchair.
“What a life!” You thought happily.
You walked into one of the isles and started shelving books right away, you were absentmindedly scanning the title of one of the books when the lady with dark glasses approached you.
“Hi, sorry, do you know where I can find books on the contemporary arts?” She asked.
“I’m first day.” You blurted out then cringed heavily. “Wait… sorry I was meant to say ‘sorry it’s my first day.'”
“Oh I see.” She replied.
“I-I’ll get the boss.” You said quickly as you made to walk past her.
“No no it’s ok Y/N dont worry I’ll look on my own.” she said.
You turned and looked at her.
“How do y-.” Then you let your voice trail off as you studied her face. “Why did you call me Y/N? My name is A/N.” You said bluntly.
She smirked.
“No it’s not Y/N. You were about to ask how I know your name.” She said as she stepped forward and reached out to grab you.
Thinking quickly to cover yourself you tapped her hand away as you activated your quirk.
“DOUBT!”
She stopped and looked at you, her face showing hesitation and you watched with heart pounding in your chest.
“Did it work? Was she thinking about me? Please may she say something with the word ‘doubt’ in it so I know!”
“You were saying?” You coaxed her.
“Sorry I uh… I thought maybe I had called you by your true name but now I’m not so sure, I doubt I’m correct.” She said.
You breathed a sigh of relief and straightened.
“That’s ok, people call me the wrong name all the time.” You lied. “My name is A/N.”
“Ok, sorry.” The lady said as she shook her head and walked off.
You turned and ran to the bosses office.
“Hi, I’m sorry I need to get my phone and call my husband it’s an emergency.” You panted, out of breath from the surge of adrenaline.
“What’s wrong?” Mr Bofa asked with concern.
“I…I can’t say right now.” You said apologetically. “Please, I need to call him!”
Your boss nodded and you raced to your locker to get your phone.
You rang Hawks and put your phone to your ear.
“What’s wrong?” He asked immediately, knowing something had happened.
“Someone is here.” You replied in a panicked voice.
“Hang up I’m coming.” He said suddenly, “count backwards from 10.”
You hung up and focused on counting from ten to one, the rising anxiety suddenly fading at the distraction of counting.
By 3 Hawks had entered the library.
You pointed into the shelving, your hand still shaking slightly.
“G-glasses, she…” you stammered.
He nodded and shot into the larger section of the library, quickly scanning each isle.
He was looking for a ‘she’ with ‘glasses’
Quickly locating the only woman with glasses on Hawks grabbed the lady who had questioned you.
She screamed and fought but Hawks held her tight.
