“Are they?” You whispered, your breathing becoming erratic.
“They’re staging a capture tonight.” He said pointedly, “the father [father’s name] helped to locate them because they moved house. I don’t know the address but I will as soon as the boss rings me.” He said, lying on the last part, curious to see what you would do.
You were finding it hard to breath as intense fear gripped your windpipe and crushed your lungs.
“Fuck, he knows, he knows but he doesn’t know it’s me yet.. but he will soon.”
You hesitated a look at him and he was staring directly at you.
“What’s wrong chicken?” He said in a low voice, his sharp eyes boring into you.
“What are you going to do with the daughter when you find her?” You whispered fearfully, tears welling up in your eyes.
“What do you think I should do?” He asked in that same low, pointed tone, tilting his head to the side as if daring you to answer.
You opened your mouth to say something but no words came out.
The anxiety started to peak and you turned and fled.
Hawks didn’t call out after you as you ran, you bolted for the stairwell and raced back down to your office.
“Shit! I need to get home and grab some things and leave, they’re coming to get me, Hawks is going to be the one to arrest me. What kind of cruelty is this?!”
You quickly stuffed a few things into your bag and swung it up over your shoulder and took off out the door.
You raced down the hall and out the front, getting on the first bus that stopped and fretting the whole bus trip to the stop near your house.
You looked up into the sky as you walked down the road.
“Is Hawks tracking me?”
Not seeing anything in the sky you then focused on the path ahead. You got to the corner and stopped, peaking around into your street.
You waited, watching for any unusual signs but nothing seemed off so you started walking down the road, trying not to look too suspicious.
You were almost at the apartment when a black SUV with heavily tinted window approached from the other end of the street. It was that typical ‘bad guy’ looking car and you immediately panicked.
“Stay calm! Don’t look suspicious.”
You kept walking and the SUV stopped outside the gate of your apartment.
“SHIT!!” You screamed internally, fighting the urge to turn and run.
You put your head down and kept walking towards them, trying to calm your breathing as much as possible.
Two guys got out of the vehicle and you glanced up at them.
They definitely looked official.
You swallowed thickly and looked down again, staring at the footpath as you walked.
You heard them close their doors as you approached and all of a sudden there was a hand on your shoulder.
You screamed and threw the guys hand off.
“Hey!” He said loudly, “you need to watch where you’re going.”
“S-S-Sorry!” You stammered, standing there frozen in front of him.
“Well go on, get moving.” He said briskly, doing the ‘shoo’ action with his hand and pointing off down the street.
You nodded rapidly and ran.
When you realized they had walked towards your apartment and not chased you you turned and hid in the front yard of a house a few doors down, peaking through a gap in the fence.
“I don’t care if the owner comes out and asks me why I’m in their front yard, at this point I need help so I’ll be asking them to hide me for a bit.”
You heard a bit of noise from your apartment and you grew worried.
“I’m sure mum is still in there… is she ok?”
Some more banging followed then shouting and the men appeared with your mum between them, they had her gaffa taped and cuffed, she was screaming against the tape over her mouth and you gasped.
Tears welling up in your eyes.
They forced her into the car and hopped in, starting the car quickly and pulling away from the curb with screeching tires.
Tears flooded down your cheeks as you turned and sat back against them fence.
“They’ve got mum, they took mum and they have dad… I’m next… fuck!”
You sat there, numb. You had no one to turn to, no one you trusted and hopelessness set in.
“What do they want with me? Should I turn myself in?”
You feared the worst and decided you would hide and dodge them for as long as possible.
“I just need to get some things from home before I disappear completely.”
You stood up slowly and peeked over the fence line. The front door of your apartment was still open and you decided to try and sneak in and then sneak out again before they came back.
Walking out of the persons yard you headed towards the apartment door but as you got closer someone from the inside closed the door closed and locked it.
“FUCK THERE’S SOMEONE IN THERE AND THEY’RE PROBABLY WAITING FOR ME!”
You put your head down and kept walking.
You walked past the apartment and headed back to the bus stop.
“What do I do now?” You thought as you sat at the stop. “Maybe I should wait to see if they leave and when they do, sneak in then out?… yeah I’ll do that.”
You hopped up and walked towards the back of the apartment. You knew there was a small gap between the fences of the back of the apartment and the neighbours behind the block and thought that would be a good place to post up and wait until the people left your house.
You snuck down the gap and sat down where your apartment was, listening intently to see if the people in your house would say anything that could be of use to you.
Hours ticked by and it started to get dark.
“Maybe I should leave and find somewhere to stay the night?” You thought.
You were about to leave when you heard someone using the bathroom in your place.
“Gimme a sec then we’ll go.” They said.
You heard lights flick on, a decent pause, then toilet flush, basin tap be used then lights flick off again and your heart started pounding.
“Is this it? Is this my chance?”
You stood up and listened again.
“If I go in over the back fence and open the back door with my keys, that’ll be the best option.”
Dropping your bag; you placed your feet against the fence in front of you and your hands on the fence behind you and walked your way up.
You looked over your shoulder as you got near the top and saw the house was dark and seemed empty.
With a great deal of difficulty you clambered over the fence and dropped down into the small backyard, then creeped softly to the back door and listened.
“I just need to grab my clothes and a few things before I go.” You thought as you put the key in the lock and turned it, entering your darkened house from the back door.
Carefully you crept down the hall and made for your room, you didn’t want to turn any light on for fear of drawing attention as you weren’t sure if the house was still being watched. It didn’t look like it was but you couldn’t take chances.
You entered your room and quickly yanked a bag from the closet before turning to your draws and grabbing clothes out, not even bothering to keep things tidy.
“Quick!!!” You mentally screamed, “don’t stay too long!”
You shoved as many items into your bag as possible then zipped the bag closed.
