Hinata cleared his throat to get your attention, then spoke.
“I came to say, that if the majority sign, then you will also find my personal sign along with theirs,” he said with a bow.
It wasn’t full support… but it was the best he could do at that moment and you accepted it, knowing he was doing his best while still coming to terms with a new way of thinking.
“Now let us talk with the people and persuade them,” you said reassuringly to King Kageyama.
He wasn’t so sure, but got ready to speak to the masses regardless, and on the 11th hour, he took to the balcony over the front of the Palace to speak to everyone who had gathered while you hung at the back with Hinata.
“Explain yourself!” the crowds demanded angrily from below, crying out with distain at the decree they had seen hanging in the market place.
Your stomach knotted and suddenly you felt responsible for all of this. King Kageyama was doing this for you. For him. For the two of you. And you were forcing his hand to reveal his sexuality while not having to reveal your own.
Before your mind could tell you not to, you had walked out beside him and held your hand up to draw the attention of the crowds.
“Citizens of Karasuno!” you called loudly, “allow me to speak.”
“What say you? Concubine of the King? Why is he changing the law when he has a woman by his side?” One yelled from the front.
“There is no delicate way to announce this so I will proclaim the truth of the matter,” you said loudly, heart beating so hard you could feel it pulsing down your arms, “I am not of female origin.”
There was a sudden hush over the crowd and you stood in the suffocating silence, praying someone would say something at least.
“It is true,” King Kageyama added in after the longest time, “and I will wed Y/N. There are no doubts in my mind.”
“A man marrying another man?!” some old lady shrieked from the back of the crowd- her hysteria rushing through to the front runners like a tsunami wave.
A cacophony of opposition met your ears and although the negative reaction hurt, the warmth of King Kageyama’s arm around your shoulders held you together.
Hinata, from the back, heard the loud opposition and his heart broke for you. He had had a little time to come to terms with the truth, as well as time to remember how much of an allegiance he had to you.
“I stand with Y/N!” he suddenly said loudly, stepping forward to your side.
You were surprised. You knew he would sign if the majority of people signed but here he was standing up for you now against the opposition.
“Y/N is an amazing person, what does gender have to do with this?” he asked the crowds.
There were more unhappy noises from below but you saw a few people starting to think about it.
“Y/N saved my life,” he then called, “I owe him my every breath.”
He then turned to you and gave you a solemn apologetic look.
“I apologize for my opposition Y/N, please forgive me. I have no qualms with you ruling beside the King.”
He got down on bended knee and bowed.
Suddenly the maids called to you from below.
“We also stand by Y/N and his kindness!” they called up to you.
You smiled down at them, happy that you at least had a few people on side.
“If there is not a decision in favour by sun down, I, King Kageyama of Karasuno, will denounce my role as King and make a new city with Y/N by my side and you will be left without a ruler, vulnerable and naked under the scorching dessert sun. A feast for any kingdom who wishes to devour you!” King Kageyama roared at his subjects and you jumped with surprise.
“Tobio,” you whispered with horror, “you cannot say that.”
“I can and I will. I do not care for these people who have incurred my wrath. If they don’t accept you, I won’t accept them,” he growled, glaring at the throngs below as they fell silent.
“I too, stand with Y/N and support this decision,” someone from the back of the crowd called, “if King Kageyama leaves, I leave with him.”
A murmur went through the crowd and slowly one by one, people came forward and joined forces with you and King Kageyama- proclaiming their acceptance of you in an acting role. Until finally… it was close to a unanimous vote.
The scribe from the sidelines stepped forwards and whispered something into King Kageyama ear and your raven haired man grinned from ear to ear then grabbed your hand in his and raised it high.
“By order!” he shouted loudly, “I declare that the new law be passed, as majority have voted in favour of the new marriage laws!”
Relief washed over you and tears spilled from your eyes as Hinata jumped joyfully beside you and those who were in favour of your, and King Kageyama’s, union cheered from below.
“In 3 days Y/N and I shall be wed!” King Kageyama called to the crowds, “there will be singing and dancing and a great feast for a week!”
A cheer rose up and you let go of King Kageyama’s hand and engulfed him in a hug, which he returned, although he looked a little embarrassed to be doing so in front of such a large crowd.
After a few final words, you, King Kageyama, and Hinata walked back into the room to discuss what had happened.
“Y/N, just know I will support you from now on. No matter what,” Hinata said with a bow, “it is an honour to be under your leadership.”
“Do you wish to be called by Queen?” King Kageyama asked you.
“I do not mind what my title is, but I do feel like Queen may not suit, but we can ponder the matter later,” you said, feeling a little brain dead at that moment.
King Kageyama nodded and then turned to Hinata.
“You are excused, Hinata, I wish to be alone with Y/N,” he said and the orangette scrambled to get out of the room so you two could have some privacy together.
The minute you were alone together his lips were on yours and his hands were in your hair.
You melted into him. This was the perfect way to end such a stressful day, but now you had a wedding to prepare for!
