“Ah, fudge and caramel on a stick, I was just getting to the good bit,” you said with a frown and an annoyed click of your fingers when you heard the bell, “I’m hungry now, though, because of the fudge and caramel on a stick.”
“Did you want to get food with me after school today?” he asked, “I don’t have practice.”
“Oh! Yes! And then I can tell you all about the rest of what happened! Spoiler alert. My dad is actually a real dick.”
“That’s not a spoiler alert. I already knew that,” Kenma replied bluntly, his candidness making you laugh.
“Ok, well, we’ll talk more this afternoon, ok?” you asked, reaching out to squeeze his hand before letting it go to walk to class.
“Yeah,” he replied, giving you a warm side glance through his fringe.
“And then! They said they were going to pay him a visit,” you said excitedly, pausing your mad crunching of spoon in glass as you sat in the cafe booth retelling the story of last night to Kenma.
He had listened quietly the whole time. His whole attention on you and you felt like the luckiest girl in the world.
“That’s good,” he said once you had stopped talking.
“Right?” you said with a happy grin as you stabbed your spoon into the crushed ice of your halo-halo drink, “oooo, a jelly piece,” you whispered happily as you scooped it out of the glass and popped it into your mouth. “Hey where’s your pissy-pee? You don’t have it with you today?”
“I finished Monster Hunter,” he replied after swallowing some of the sweet drink.
“You did! That’s awesome!” you replied happily, “so what now?”
“I’ve ordered another game,” he said calmly, “it’s a new one so I have to wait for it to come in.”
“Oooo, excitement,” you said, scooping out some more of the sweet ube ice cream with a small slither of jackfruit in amongst the crushed ice, “when is it coming in?”
“Next week. Monday. After the prom. Prom is this Friday.”
“Prom…PROM! Oh my god I haven’t RSVP’D!” you gasped, “that’s… what’s today? Is today Tuesday?”
“FUCK! It’s two days away?! Is it too late now to RSVP?”
“Let’s just go. I thought I had RSVP’d for you when I sent my own in,” Kenma said, trying to remember if he had or not.
“Did you really RSVP for me?” you asked with giant watery eyes.
“I’m pretty sure I did?” he replied.
“You’re amazing. Thank you so much, Kenma,” you said again, reaching for his hand on the table and squeezing it, “I’ll give you a hug later.”
He nodded and you both went back to drinking your drinks in peace.
Nervously, you put your prom outfit on and turned to look at yourself in the mirror.
“Can I see, honey?” Lolita’s excited voice asked from behind your closed studio door.
“Yes!” you called out to her.
She pushed the door open and looked at you with her hands clutched together.
“Ohhh!!!” She exclaimed, “you look simply amazing!”
“Thanks,” you replied shyly, “it’s because you helped me pick this one out.”
“Oh, don’t be silly, you picked it yourself,” she replied as she tottled into the room and gently twisted and shook different parts of your outfit to make sure it was sitting just right, “perfect, perfect, perfect,” she hummed as she bustled around you.
You beamed at her.
“Thanks for everything, Lolita,” you said warmly, “I’ll catch the bus in… and if it’s gonna be a late night then I’ll stay at Kozu’s but I’ll text you to let you know.”
“Yes, please let me know,” she said with a smile.
“I will,” you replied, bending down and grabbing for your shoes to put them on.
Lolita helped you with the last of your things and then you were off out the door and walking up to the bus station to catch it to school.
You hadn’t thought it through… hopping onto the public bus dressed up to the hilt. Your embarrassment peaked as you got on and found a seat then sat down.
It felt like every single eye in the immediate 10 kilometers was on you, and you just stared out the window and tried to ignore them.
“Just gotta get to school.”
You took a deep breath in then sighed it out and pulled your phone out to text Kenma.
“Hey, I’m on my way…” you sent.
“I’m almost ready,” he sent back.
“I’m nervous,” you admitted to him.
“Why?” Came his reply.
“Because, I dunno, I just am,” you sent.
“I’m looking forward to seeing you,” he sent and you smiled down at your phone, your smile feeling a little wobbly from the nerves you were feeling.
You had hoped that the ride would somehow be short… but also long at the same time. You didn’t know which one was making you more nervous- being on the bus in your prom outfit, or getting to school and having Kenma see you in your prom outfit.
But you didn’t have time to stress about it anymore though because the bus arrived at your stop and you got up to get off.
“Have a fun night,” a little girl said to you as you got off and you only had time to smile at her before you passed her and got off.
You looked back at the bus, intending to call something nice back to her but the door had already closed and you just stood there watching it drive away.
“Oh well… now I have to find Kozu and—,” you turned around.
He was standing there.
“WOAH?! WHERE DID YOU—?!” You threw your arms up with the broad side of your hands facing him as if you were about to karate chop him.
“You look really good,” he said softly, his eyes watching you through his curtain fringe.
He had on just an ordinary looking suit but he looked so hot!
“You look good too!” you said, lowering your arms to your side.
He held his hand out to you and you reached out and took it, accompanying him as he walked to the school hall where the prom would be held.
More and more of your classmates could be seen as you got closer to the doors and you could hear the music coming from inside the hall.
Your teacher was waiting at the door with a clipboard full of names and, not thinking anything about it, you and Kenma just walked straight up to her and waited.
She looked down the list and ticked something then looked back up again.
“Kenma Kozume, you may enter, but Y/N, L/N, your name is not on the list.”
