“What’s happening out here?” the voice of Kuroo asked as the rest of Kenma’s team walked out of the stadium.
“We saved Kenma!” you said with glee.
“From what?” one of the other teammates asked, peering around from behind the others.
“From being stuck in a tree,” you said.
“Why was pudding up a tree?” Kuroo asked.
“Oh! No, not this Kenma.” You pointed to your boyfriend. “This one.” You pointed to the cat in your arms. “His name is Kenma.”
“Oh, so you have 2 Kenma’s now?” Kuroo asked with a smirk.
“No, this one is Kenma,” you pointed to the cat, “and this one is Kozu.”
“Ah, yes, I heard you call him by his first name before,” Kuroo said with an amused look in his eye, “first name basis… must be serious?” He raised a reading eyebrow at his teammate.
Kenma just gave him a look and then turned to you.
“Want me to walk with you?” he asked, “the shelter isn’t far from here. We’ll need to fill out paperwork.”
“Oh! Yes! Ok!” You nodded your head enthusiastically, “let’s go!”
“So you’re not coming to dinner, pudding?” Kuroo asked.
“No. I’ll stay with Y/N,” Kenma said, turning to walk with you.
Kuroo gave the back of your heads a smirk as you both walked off down the road.
“Looks like he’s smitten,” one of the other teammates commented to Kuroo as they all headed for the bus.
“Certainly seems that way,” Kuroo mused, hopping on the bus with the others, “I think they’re a well suited couple, Kenma needs someone who has a little chaotic energy to boost him up a little. If he ended up with an introvert we would never see either of them.”
“Good point,” another commented, taking a seat near the door, “I like Y/N, she’s always happy.”
……………..,,,,,,
You were elated that you had your Kenma back, but at the same time you were freaking out, fearing that the second you took him back to the shelter, they would ring the other people and tell them to come and pick him up.
You got as close as one block away from the shelter and then stopped dead in your tracks.
“I don’t want to go,” you said to your boyfriend who had stopped a step ahead of you and looked back.
“Why?” he asked, his curtain fringe covering one eye.
“Because they’re going to take him from me and give it back to that other couple and I’ll be left without him again. Why can’t we just steal him to your place?”
“Because we need to report that he was found,” Kenma replied you.
“But we already know that he is found so we don’t need to tell anyone else, right?” you said.
“We need to tell them,” Kenma said bluntly.
You pouted.
“No.”
“Come on, Y/N, we need to.”
“I don’t want to,” you said, stamping your foot in defiance.
“I don’t have the energy to fight,” Kenma said in a dull voice, turning to face you square on, “so if you don’t want to, then ok”
And with that he just turned and started walking towards the direction of his house.
“Wait… what? That’s it?” you asked with surprise, watching him walk past you in the opposite direction, “you’re not going to force me?”
“No,” he said, “I’d much prefer to be playing my game.”
“Oh.” You took a few running steps to catch up to him.
You walked in silence for a bit, but now the guilt was eating you alive.
“I’ll ring Lolita’s phone…. Not the animal shelter, just in case they’ve tapped the lines,” you said to Kenma, stopping and pulling your phone out of your pocket.
Kenma stopped beside you again with a small shake of his head at your paranoia and waited for you to make the call before taking any more steps in any direction.
Still holding Kenma in your arms, you managed to get the phone out and rang her, jiggling your leg nervously as you waited for her to pick up.
“Hello? Y/N,” Lolita’s voice came through the line, “what can I do for you?”
“Umm… I, umm… can you come out the back of the shelter or something?” you asked suspiciously.
“Is everything ok?” she asked you.
“Umm well… yes and no,” you replied evasively.
This concerned her and she agreed to meet immediately, then she hung up and you put your phone away.
“Ok. I’m going to show her and if she goes to take him, we make a run for it,” you said firmly.
“Do we have to run?” Kenma asked with a sigh.
“Yes!” you said again, dead set on your plan.
You walked the finally leg to the shelter and walked around behind the building to the back door, where Lolita was bustling her way out, looking around with a worried expression on her face.
She saw you and Kenma approaching with a bundle in arms and at first she thought you had picked up an injured kitty and she started to get even more worried.
“Oh. Oh, what happened?” she asked as she tottered over to you to have a look at the injured ball of fluff in your arms.
But as the cat turned its head to look at her, she stopped.
“Kenma!” she gasped with delight, “oh! Honey! You’re alright! Is he alright? Is he ok? He’s not hurt, is he?” Her delight did an about turn and revisited her earlier concerns but you shook your head to calm her.
“It’s ok; he’s not hurt. He was stuck in a tree and we saved him but I don’t want to give him back to those people. They were obviously not nice to him and that’s why he ran away,” you said with a determined look on your face.
“Well they returned his adoption papers earlier this morning so it appears that they don’t want him back,” she said sadly, “I was disappointed at first, but I’m glad he’s ok!”
“I don’t want him to go back to the shelter though. What if some other nasty person gets him?” you asked sadly, “can my boyfriend adopt him?”
Lolita looked at Kenma who was standing beside you and hadn’t said anything up until this point.
“Do you want to adopt him?” she asked your boyfriend hopefully.
He nodded.
“Yes, because he is important to Y/N and I want her to be happy,” he said softly.
Your heart nearly burst in your chest, and judging by the look on Lolita’s face, hers had nearly burst too.
