It was a little after the game had ended now and you still hadn’t showed up. Kenma was starting to get concerned, as he had been expecting you to turn up the second the game had finished… but you still weren’t there.
“Missing your girl, pudding?” Kuroo teased him.
“No,” Kenma lied, stopping watching the door and getting back to packing his gym bag.
Kuroo smirked, knowing his quiet friend was definitely lying.
Just then you came bursting through the doors and ran over to Kenma.
“Kozu!” you gasped, “quick! Quick!”
And before he could ask what was going on, you had dragged him out the door at a run, and off down the hall.
“Kozu?! First name basis?!” Kuroo called with surprise, his delay in speech missing you and Kenma by a few seconds after you’d left.
Down the hall you ran, with Kenma right behind you, his wrist in your firm grip.
“He’s here! He’s here!” you shouted with glee back to your man.
“Who?” Kenma asked.
“Kenma is! He needs help though, he’s up a tree!”
“Kenma? Cat Kenma?!” Kenma asked, squinting in the bright sunlight as you tore out through the front doors and over to a tall tree.
“He’s there!” you squealed with delight, pointing up to one of the highest branches to where a rugged looking kitty was perched on the thickest part of the branch.
“Oh. It is him,” Kenma said, staring up into the tree.
“Yeah! Please, can you help me get him down?” you begged your boyfriend.
He nodded, quickly assessing how to get up the tree to get to the terrified cat.
“Don’t worry, Kenma! We’ll get you down!” you called up to the cat.
“Meow?” Kenma cried from up top, his claws gripping into the sides of the branch.
“Please, Kozu,” you asked you boyfriend, who had now stepped to the side so that he could jump up to the first branch and grab it.
Effortlessly, he grabbed it in hand and swung a leg up so that he could hook it over and pull himself up to straddling the branch.
“Yay!” you called excitedly when he had righted himself, “go Kozu!”
He looked very apathetic about going up any higher and just sat in the tree… on the lowest branch… looking up.
“You need to go up higher!” you called to him.
He just sighed.
“Come on, Kozu!” you called again.
“Uh… Kenma…” Kenma called up to the cat, “come here…”
“He won’t come down with you just sitting there calling to him, you need to get up there and bring him down,” you called, cupping your hands to your mouth in the hopes that if your boyfriend could hear you clearer then he would be spurred into action… but he still didn’t move from the branch his lazy ass had landed on.
With an exasperated sigh you let your hands fall to your side and then you set your face with determination.
“Ok, you know what? Help me up.”
You stepped towards the tree and held one of your hands up so that Kenma could grip your wrist, and you- his, then you used your legs to walk up the side of the tree trunk and flick yourself over the same branch as Kenma.
You sat there facing him.
“Ok, I’m going up. You stay here and support,” you said to him.
He nodded and watched as you climbed up the next few branches towards the cat.
By now, a few other people had stopped to watch to see what was going on, and called their encouragement as you got closer to the terrified feline.
You were about to reach for you fluffy eared Kenma when you felt someone hold your ankle and you looked down to see Kenma (your boyfriend) had followed you up a little way as well.
“I’m gonna reach for him, ok?” you warned your man as you started to stretch your arm out.
With a lot of encouraging words to the terrified kitty, you reached an arm out towards him. He eyed you as you stretched out and scratched his head with your fingertips.
“Hey, Kenma. It’s ok now. I’m sorry those people took you away from me but I promise you that I won’t let them take you again… if you come with me… then I’ll know that you want to stay with me and I’ll make sure no one takes you again.”
Kenma the cat had no idea what you were saying but he felt your conviction and he knew you were a good human, so he slowly crept towards you and let you lift him off the branch- but not without his claws coming out to grab onto something to steady himself.
“Ouch. Ouch! Claws… ow, ow, ow,” You hissed and gritted your teeth as you let Kenma grab onto you.
“Do you have him?” Kenma, your man, asked from below you.
“Yep. Help me down.”
He couldn’t really help you but he just gave verbal directions on where you should put your feet and you followed orders as best you could.
Finally, your feet were firmly planted on the ground and fluffy Kenma was still in your arms.
Those around you applauded and gave advice on where to take the cat but you assured them that you knew him and would take good care of him- much to their relief.
“Thanks for helping me,” you said to your boyfriend after the hype had settled down, “now I just need to convince my dad to let me keep him.”
Your mind cast back to the last interaction you had had with your father and you shuddered.
“Umm… actually, I don’t think it would be a good idea to ask him about it at this point because he wasn’t very happy with me the last time we spoke… well… he’s not happy with me at any point if I’m being completely honest.”
Kenma thought for a little bit as you stood there outside the stadium.
“What if I adopted him?” he asked.
“You… you would?!” you asked with delight.
“I think my mum would let me,” Kenma said, “and I like cats.”
“Oh! Kozu! That would be awesome awesome! Like, more awesome than just one awesome!” you said with delight, wanting to give him a hug but not being able to because of the cat in your arms.
Kenma nodded and gave you a soft look.
“I’ll give you a proper hug once I put Kenma down… but I’m not putting him down here just in case he runs off,” you said with a smile.
“Ok,” Kenma replied.
