“Hmm,” the doctor hummed then turned to your dad once he had come back into the room, “we might have to do an x-ray just to make sure…”
Their voices droned on in the background, chatting back and forth as your mind wandered elsewhere. Then your phone dinged in your pocket and you pulled it out to see who it was.
“Hey. Are you ok?” Kenma texted.
“I’m at the doctors,” you sent back.
“Is your ankle really bad?” he asked.
“Yeah. I think they said something about doing x rays or something,” you replied.
“Oh.” He sent.
“Yeah,” you sent back.
“Umm… I have health potions,” he replied, then immediately sent a line of potion emojis and you smiled at your phone.
“Oh! My health bar is at 100% again,” you sent. “Thank you. Here is your money.”
And you sent back a line of money emoji to him.
“I have volleyball practice after school,” he then sent randomly.
“Umm… I don’t know where I’ll be… I might be at home. If I am, I’ll come and see you because dad has a late shift today so he’ll be gone by lunchtime, but if I’m in the hospital then I won’t be able to come. I could run away from the hospital?” you sent.
“Who is going to hold my PSP if you’re not there?” he asked.
“I’ll do my best to be there!” you replied, smiling at your phone again.
“Y/N?” your dad’s voice called, “come on. Stop daydreaming. We need to go to the medical center across the road to get an x ray. They have a spot for us right now, so hurry!”
“But I can’t hurry. I have a sore ankle,” you said as you stood up and almost fell over.
“Well hurry anyway, you’re always so slow,” he grunted, not bothering to help you.
You hobbled after him, wanting to get this over and done with so you could go and see Kenma.
…………………………..
After school, Kenma made his way to the gymnasium and walked in… alone.
“Oh?” Kuroo asked cheekily with his tongue poking out of his mouth just a little, arching his back as he leaned back to get a good look at Kenma entering the gym, “where’s your sidekick?”
Kenma narrowed his eyes with an almost confused look on his face, almost as if to ask Kuroo, ‘what do you mean? She’s not always with me’.
“Don’t give me that look,” Kuroo said with a chuckle, “what happened to Y/N?”
“She hurt her ankle yesterday and is at the doctors today,” Kenma said plainly as he put his bag down.
“So why aren’t you with her?” Kuroo asked teasingly.
“Because I’m at school.”
“No, but why aren’t you going over to check on her? Is she at home?”
“I don’t know,” Kenma replied apathetically, glancing at the door as another team mate walked in.
Kuroo smirked.
He could tell Kenma was missing you. Just the way he had reacted when the other team mate had walked in, and the dejected look on his face was enough to tell.
“Are you seeing her after practice?” Kuroo asked.
Kenma shrugged, holding onto his PSP and glancing at the door again.
“You miss her, just admit it,” Kuroo teased his friend.
“I don’t,” Kenma replied, looking at Kuroo.
“You do,” Kuroo said, “I can see it in your eyes.”
“I don’t,” Kenma replied, looking away to the door again.
“Well, if you don’t miss her then stop staring at the door,” Kuroo challenged.
Just then you arrived, bouncing through the door with a giant moon boot on your right leg.
“I’m here!” you announced brightly.
“Ah! We’ve been waiting for you!” Kuroo teased.
You weren’t looking at anyone but Kenma now and made your way over to him.
“How’s your ankle?” he asked, wanting to find out how you were before giving you his PSP.
“It’s ok. They’ve given me pain meds and they are AMAZING! it’s just a bad sprain so I have to be in this stupid boot for a few weeks but I’ll be ok, I’m not gonna die. Well… I might die if dad finds out that I snuck out to come here but I wouldn’t miss coming here. I wanted to see you because I missed….” Your voice trailed off as you noticed Kuroo eavesdropping in on the conversation.
“I missed… holding your PSP,” you said quickly, taking it and hobbling to the bench seat to sit down.
Kenma watched you go and sit, then turned around to walk to the nets.
“Ready now?” Kuroo asked as he walked up beside the blond haired guy.
Kenma nodded.
He played one of his best games that day and you cheered loudly for him every time it looked like he did something good.
You had no idea what was going on but he looked amazing playing out there.
“He’s actually kinda cute,” you thought as you watched him move strategically around the court to set other players up for a win. And every so often he would glance back at you- causing you to smile shyly, heart all a flutter.
It was during one of these moments that you suddenly had a thought.
“Hold on?! Do I like Kenma?! Like… romantically?” Your eyes shot wide open and you stared at the ground to try and come to terms with the question you had just asked yourself, “Wait what? Since when did this happen?? Wait. Hold on. Hang on a moment. Do I ACTUALLY like him?!”
You looked up at him again and he was looking at you so you quickly looked away.
“Ohhhhh no. Oh no. Oh no no no no no. I think I’ve got feelings for him. Ok, I need to calm down and ask myself a few questions.”
You closed your eyes and took a deep breath in. You then imagined Kenma asking you out, and it was a difficult one to imagine, but it made your face burn and your heart race. Then you thought about holding hands with him and you nearly passed out… so you didn’t think any further than that. That was enough stress for one day.
You had been so deep in thought with your eyes closed that you didn’t hear Kenma call your name and come walking over.
He had seen you close your eyes, with a very odd look on your face that was bordering on you having a heart attack, and he thought that you might have been in pain
“Y/N?” he asked as he approached you.
You didn’t respond.
“Umm… are you ok?” he asked.
After thinking about holding Kenma’s hand your eyes flew open and saw him leaning over you a bit, a worried look on his face.
You screamed.
