“Oh hey! It’s your side character, pudding head,” Kuroo teased his teammate.
“I don’t need to hear it from you, Kuro,” Kenma said, still without looking at you, but at least moving now, and walking onto the court.
Some of the guys closer to you said hi and greeted you nicely, then you sat yourself down next to Kenma’s bag and watched with great anticipation.
He didn’t strike you as the athletic type so this was going to be interesting to watch.
The captain, Kuroo, did some speech thing about blood and brains and your mind wandered off thinking about biology, then school work, then lunch, food, ice cream, dessert- and how it sounded like desert… what if camels had humps under their bellies instead of on top?
“Y/N?” Kuroo asked, shaking a blue item in front of your face.
“Huh?!” you asked with surprise, blinking at him a few times.
“Could you hold this for Kenma? He tried to hide it in his pocket.”
You looked at Kuroo’s hand again and saw that he was holding onto Kenma’s PSP, intending to give it to you.
“This is a holy item!” you gasped, looking past Kuroo to Kenma, “can I actually hold this??”
“She gets you, pudding,” Kuroo teased his friend.
Kenma nodded at you.
“I trust you, Y/N,” he said, looking at you from behind his curtain fringe.
Your heart skipped a beat. You felt special, and you took it with both hands and held it close to your heart.
“I’ll look after this really well, don’t worry Kenma, you can count on me to guard this with my life I—.” As you were speaking your hand slipped and the PSP slid down your front a little. “Don’t worry! I got it! We’re good!”
Kenma deadpanned at you and you grinned brightly back.
“She’ll look after it,” Kuroo said as he walked back to Kenma and plopped his hand down on the head of the blond haired teammate.
Kenma gave Kuroo a mildly annoyed look but didn’t say anything. Then everyone was called in to start practicing.
You held Kenma’s PSP close to your chest as you watched them assemble on court, cherishing this auspicious occasion. You knew this was a very rare occurrence so the significance wasn’t lost on you.
As the team members started to practice, they forgot you were there and you were left to watch in peace.
Well… everyone forgot, except Kenma, who would occasionally give you side glances.
Momentarily, forgetting that you were holding onto his beloved PSP, you thought that he was looking at you and after he did a sneaky setter dump, he dropped back down and turned his head slightly to look at you from the corner of his eye.
Your heart skipped a beat as his feline eyes glanced over you for a second before he turned his attention back to the ball and the nets.
“Oh?” You looked down at your chest and placed one hand on your heart, “that felt funny.”
Every few seconds or so Kenma would look at you, and you were enjoying how it made you feel, the way his gaze glossed you over before he would go back to focusing on his game.
After the game finished he made a direct line to you and put his hand out.
Confused, you gave him one of your hands and he just held it lightly for a few seconds before letting it go and pointing to his PSP.
“Huh?” you asked, looking down at it, “oh!”
Then you burst out laughing, but clutched the PSP closer to your chest instead of giving it to him.
“Your game thingy and I had a talk. And it doesn’t want to go back to you,” you said cheekily, “it wants to come and live with me.”
He just stared at you, not knowing what to say.
Neither of you moved.
It wasn’t what you were expecting. Usually people would explode at you or hit you. But he just waited.
After a few seconds, you put your hand out again.
“If you help me get up, I’ll give it back,” you said, wiggling your fingers at him.
He took your hand again and helped you up and you couldn’t help but notice that he was quite strong.
“Wow. You did that easily?” you commented, handing him his PSP.
He took it immediately and pressed the start button.
“I’m level 10, I should be strong enough to pull you up,” he replied.
You didn’t quite understand what he was on about so you just smiled then looked down at the hand of yours that he had held.
It still felt warm, you could still feel his hand against yours even though it wasn’t there any more.
“Well! We’re off,” two of the team members called, and it snapped you out of your daze enough for you to wave to them, then you turned to Kenma.
“Hey! Let’s go, I’ll walk you home,” you said to him.
He looked up and nodded at you, then went back to playing his game.
You smiled and said goodbye to Kuroo, then you and Kenma left together.
Kuroo smirked as you both left, then chuckled to himself.
“I think there’s a little bit of romance blooming here…”
The next day was as normal, except you had a shift at the shelter after school but, as usual, that really important information had slipped your mind until the last minute and you suddenly remembered as the final bell rang.
Racing out into the hall, you grabbed your bag and ran for the gates, once again, forgetting to tell Kenma where you were going.
The shy blond got his bag and pulled his PSP out, looking down the hallway towards your locker to see if you would be bouncing down to see him soon, but you weren’t there.
His game started up so he turned his attention to it and headed for the stairs, assuming that you would suddenly appear beside him half way across the oval.
But you never arrived.
He stopped at the other end of the oval, at the half fallen fence, and looked back… but you weren’t anywhere to be seen.
With a shrug, he got over the fence then headed to his house but a part of him was wondering where you were.
……………………..
“Hi Lolita!” you greeted in your exuberant voice as you barreled through the doors of the animal shelter.
“Oh sunshine,” she greeted just as brightly, adjusting her glasses, “my day has gotten so much better now for seeing your beautiful face, how was school?”
“It was boring. But I’m here now!”
“Honey, it’s lovely to have you,” she said, “would you be a dear and refill the water bowls for the cats?”
