“Slow down…. SLOW DOWN. STOP TODOROKI!”
The sound of ice erupting from inside the car drowned everything else out and your vision went white just before you blacked out.
*scratch freeze frame*
How did you get to this point? Well let’s start back at the very beginning.
………………………………..
“Y/N,” Todoroki greeted you in the common room at the Heights Alliance dorms, “may I request your assistance with my driver’s permit?”
“Are you going for your Provisionals?” you asked him, “looking up and pausing the show you were watching on your laptop.
He nodded. Those intense mismatched eyes staring you down.
“You recently got your provisional license,” he stated in a calm voice, “would you be able to give me some advice on my driving?”
“Yeah, sure,” you replied, “do you have a car to practice in? We could use mine if we need to.”
“I have one of my father’s old cars,” Todoroki replied.
“Oh. Sweet, uh, ok, well when did you want to practice?”
“I am available tomorrow evening,” Todoroki replied.
“Yep. Same. Ok cool, meet here after class then we’ll go and do some driving practice,” you said with a smile.
…………………….
After class, as organized, you and Todoroki met in the common area then walked down to the school car park to where Todoroki had his vehicle parked.
“How did you get it here?” you asked him, “did you drive it?”
“No. I had our concierge drive it over,” he said, pulling the keys from his pocket and pointing it at the car then pressing the unlock button.
The blinkers on the car flashed and you walked to the passenger side while Todoroki walked to the driver’s side and got in.
Settling into your seat, you watched as your duel haired classmate sat down stiffly and placed both hands on the curve of the wheel, gripping firmly as he stared out the front window.
“Seatbelt?” you prompted him.
“Oh. Yes,” he said, snapping out of his intense concentration to put his belt on, then returning to his original position, poised and ready.
“Dude. Breathe,” you deadpanned
“I am breathing?” he stated, still staring out the front window.
“No. Relax. You look so up tight, just drop your shoulders down a bit.”
“This helps with driving?”
“I guess? All I’m saying is you don’t need to be nervous,”
“I see.”
“Ok… is the car in neutral?”
Todoroki looked down at the gear stick then at you.
“I assume so,” he stated calmly.
“Uh… ok then, start the car.”
He reached for the ignition hole and placed the key in and turned the car on, immediately placing his hands back on the wheel and staring intently out the front again.
“Ok. Take the hand brake off,” you encouraged, watching him take one hand off the wheel and place it on the handbrake in the centre console then let it off, “this is manual right? Have you got your foot on the clutch?”
“Clutch?”
“How much driving have you done, Todoroki?” you asked curiously, seeing that this guy had zero idea what he was doing.
“I have completed 3 hours,” Todoroki replied, finally looking across at you.
“Where did you drive for those 3 hours?” you asked.
“I did not drive. I sat in the car to get myself acquainted with the setting. I did that for 3 hours.”
You facepalmed.
“Oh my fuck. Ok. I need to teach you to drive. Let’s stay in the car park though, because you’re definitely not ready for the road.”
Todoroki nodded, not understanding what you meant but just grateful you were going to teach him to drive.
“Ok, foot on the clutch. That’s the pedal on the far left.”
Todoroki looked down and placed his left foot gingerly on the clutch petal.
“Ok. Middle pedal, where your right foot is now, is the brake. And far right is your accelerator. So right now, you want to have your right foot hovering over the accelerator pedal and as you let the left foot out, engage the right foot.”
“Y/N, I will be honest with you. I do not understand anything of what you have just said,” Todoroki stated, looking down at his pedals and trying to follow instruction.
“Left foot hard on left pedal,” you said firmly, watching as he did so, pushing the clutch all the way in.
“Ok. Right foot placed gently on far right pedal. Now do this…”
You held your hands up to show him that as he let his left foot out, he was to push his right foot in and he glanced at your actions then nodded.
“Ok… go,” you said, putting the car into first gear in preparation for movement.
Todoroki dropped the clutch and slammed his right foot down on the accelerator and the car stalled.
“It did not work?” he said, confused.
“Bro! You can’t just dump the clutch like that you have to be gentle!” You chuckled, shaking your head with amusement.
He stared at you, utterly befuddled, and you sighed.
“Again. Let’s do it again.”
Once more, he turned the car on and you checked to make sure he was in first gear then set him up again with the pedals.
“Ok now slowly let the clutch out and push your accelerator foot down. GENTLY!”
You leaned over towards him a little so that you could see what he was doing and saw that he was being much more careful this time.
“Good, good, keep going like that until you feel the car start to move forward,” you encouraged.
As Todoroki let the clutch out you felt the car engage and the engine started to make a deeper rumbling noise as everything picked up.
Slowly the vehicle moved forwards and you grinned.
“Good! Ok, you can let the clutch all the way out now and just use the accelerator to go forwards.”
The look of sheer concentration on Todoroki’s face, as he rolled across the empty car park, was priceless and you grinned at him then looked out the front window.
“Ok. Change gears,” you said, watching as he put one hand on the gear stick and froze, “do you know how to change?”
“No.”
“Ok, first, turn because you’re heading for the building…. Todoroki?… hey! HEY! TURN! No don’t go faster, slow down! SLOW DOWN! Stop, Todoroki!”
But your classmate had panicked and in a final attempt to save himself and you, let go of the steering wheel and threw his hands out, creating a wall of ice through the front windscreen- sending glass flying everywhere, just as the car nose dived into the side of the building.
The impact knocked you out but Todoroki managed to stay conscious and he quickly opened his door and then dragged you and himself from the wreckage.
“Todoroki?! What happened?!” Midoriya’s voice called as he ran across the parking lot, “what happened? Why are you in a car? Are you learning to drive? Did the brakes fail?”
“Midoriya, please call Mr Aizawa. Y/N is hurt,” Todoroki said, ignoring Midoriya’s questions.
The greenette nodded and fled the scene, running to get your homeroom teacher.
…………………………..
*20 minutes later*
You scrunched your closed eyes then slowly opened them, looking around the school hospital bay and finally settling your vision on Todoroki.
“What happened?” you croaked.
“You fell unconscious,” Todoroki replied, “we were in a car crash.”
You tried to remember what had happened, leading up to this point, and scrunched your eyebrows, recollection the memories.
“You were driving…” you mumbled.
He nodded.
“Ice….”
“Yes. The building was in the way, so I used my ice to create a barrier.”
“But I blacked out when we hit it?”
“Yes.”
“Todoroki,” you said, reaching over to pat his hand, “dude. Don’t drive again. Just catch transport, ok?”
“I believe that would be the safest option for me,” he replied with a small smile, “I do not want people to be going unconscious every time I drive.”
