“Call an ambulance.” Dabi said quickly as he burst into the nurses office with you in his arms.
“What happened?” The nurse replied as she got up and walked over to you and Dabi; her mind clicking into gear the minute he had entered.
“She got hit in the stomach and she’s… not feeling well.” Dabi said, scrunching his nose with annoyance as he tried to lie about the seriousness of the situation.
“I’m sure she’ll be fine.” The nurse deadpanned, slightly irked that he was, in her eyes, being melodramatic.
You looked up at Dabi, a threatening look in your eye as you silently promising him that you would swiftly remove his balls with a knife if he even so much as thought about telling the nurse what was going on.
“Hop down so I can examine you.” The nurse said to you- so Dabi walked over to the nearest bed and gingerly placed you down.
You winced as your body uncurled and you covered your mouth, feeling like you were going to throw up as a wave of nausea washed over you.
The nurse grabbed a sick bag for you and instructed you to hold it to your mouth while she helped you sit back a little more on the bed and started touching your stomach and abdomen.
“Does this hurt?” She asked as she pressed into your lower abdomen.
“Yeah.” You grunted, still holding the sick bag up while Dabi watched on nervously. “I’m getting cramps every now and again.”
The nurse stood up and furrowed her brows then asked you to lie back and rest on the bed, which you did, gently lying on your side and trying to get the covers out from underneath you so you could cover yourself with them.
As Dabi reached forward to pull the covers out from under you he noticed some bright red blood stains on the crisp white sheets and called your attention to it.
“Hey.” He said lowly, “you’re bleeding.”
“Where?” You asked, looking your arms over for any sign of injury.
“Dunno.” He said, rolling you a little to check your sides.
Just then you got another cramp and you curled up and groaned a little. Suddenly your eyes flew open and you looked up him with a terrified look on your face.
“Leave.” You said bluntly to him.
“Why?” He demanded.
“Just leave!” You said again urgently.
He backed away, unwilling to go but being spurred on by the tone in your voice at the same time.
“Uh… nurse?” You called hesitantly, one eye still on Dabi who was slowly making his way out the door.
“Yes?” She asked as she walked over to you.
“Uh… I… I think I’ve got my period?” You said in a soft voice as you sat up and looked at the sheets where the red blood was.
You showed it to the nurse then pulled your aching body out of bed and looked at the back of your pants in the mirror nearby, noting a stain on the back of them.
“Yeah… I’ve got my period.” You said with relief and annoyance- annoyance that it had come on so heavily and suddenly.
“Ok.” The nurse said as she went and got you a sanitary item.
You took it from her and another cramp hit you and you winced again.
“Another cramp?” She asked.
You nodded.
“Sweetheart.” She said softly as she placed a hand on your shoulder, “I’m going to call an ambulance for you.”
“Why?” You asked in surprise.
“As a medical professional I have my reasons for ordering this, but I think you will understand why once you have had a blood test.”
“Uh. Ok?” You replied, “could Dabi come?”
“Is Dabi your boyfriend?” She asked gently.
“Yes he is?” You replied, still not understanding why she was asking strange questions.
“Then yes, I think it’s important that he is with you for the results.” She said, before turning back to her desk to give you some privacy to insert/apply the sanitary item while calling for the emergency services.
“Results?! What results?” You thought.
……………………………..
The ambulance arrived at the school and you and Dabi hopped in and were taken to the closest public hospital while your parents were notified and they said they would meet you there.
Not much was said on the ride in and the paramedic gave you some pain relief for the cramping and just kept you comfortable for the duration of the trip.
Once inside you were taken straight into ultrasound and the sonographer set you up for an abdominal scan, placing the gel on your lower abdomen then placing the probe onto your skin.
“Now let’s have a little look here.” He said as he gently moved the probe over your belly, looking intently at the screen and enlarging the image.
Dabi was looking at the screen and could see a small grey bean shaped thing in the middle of a whole heap of black.
“What’s that?” He asked the sonographer, gesturing to the image that the man seemed particularly interested in.
“Just give me a moment.” The sonographer said as he changed the settings and waited intently, the room filling with silence.
The sonographer let out a small sigh and removed the probe from your belly.
“Excuse me a moment, I’m just going to get the doctor.” He said sullenly as he stood up and left the room.
“What’s wrong?” You asked Dabi.
“I…I think he was looking at a baby.” Dabi said in a quiet voice as he hung his head.
“What?! How? But-.”
“You’ve had a miscarriage.” Dabi croaked out.
“What?” You replied numbly, “but I’m not pregnant? I’ve got my period?”
“Stop being in denial,” he snapped, looking up at you with a pain stricken look on his face. “You were pregnant and now you’re not.”
You were about to reply him but the doctor came in and gave you a polite greeting before sitting down next to you in the chair.
“Miss L/N.” He said pleasantly, “I hear you had a pretty bad hit today? What happened?”
“Umm, I was playing volleyball.” You said, your voice quivering, emotions starting to act up from what Dabi had just said to you. “And I got hit in the guts.”
“I see.” The doctor said as he turned his attention to the ultrasound screen and had a good look while the sonographer showed him some images.
“Miss L/N.” He said gently, after reviewing the images shown to him by the sonographer. “I have some bad news…”
Your eyes welled up with tears.
“Was there a baby?” You asked in a broken voice.
The doctor nodded solemnly.
“But unfortunately we have been unable to detect a heart beat. Due to the blow to the abdomen that you received, the pregnancy is no longer viable.”
Your heart sank and Dabi got up and walked out of the room.
