“News?” she asked from the other end, a little bit of confusion in her voice, “what news sweetheart, we only just saw you a few hours ago?”
“Umm, well… I… this is sudden and I hope it doesn’t shock you but Kana and I…”
“Yes?” she asked, still a little confused.
“Well… we’re uh, dating…”
There was a pause on the other end of the line before Mrs Takami let out a loud gasp of elated surprise.
“Oh my god! Honey! That’s beautiful- HAWKS!” she shouted, covering the receiver with her hand as she yelled for her husband, “come here!”
“Yeah,” Hiyoko said with a little chuckle, “uh, he told me he loved me when we left your place and it took me by surprise. I just wanted to let you know before it ended up in the news. Please keep it to yourself for now, unfortunately some people filmed us so I’m not sure when the footage will somehow end up in the hands of journalists.”
“Nugs!” Hawks voice rang out as he was put on speaker, “what’s happened? Sometime about ending up in the news?”
“Oh hey dad, Kana and I are dating,” Hiyoko said with another sheepish smile, waiting for his father’s reaction.
“Congratulations bud,” Hawks said with genuine happiness, “can’t say I didn’t see it coming.”
“You see everything coming,” Mrs Takami said with a chuckle.
“Have you told Brian and Anthony yet?” Hawks asked, “if you haven’t, I suggest you ring them now otherwise Brian is going to be highly offended if he hears it on the news and not from you.”
“Oh!” Hiyoko said sharply, “yes! Yeah, I’d better do that now. Umm, sorry, we’ll talk tomorrow, ok?”
“That’s fine,” Mrs Takami said happily, “ring them now. Love you, Yoko, that’s wonderful news.”
“Thanks mum, bye dad.”
“Chat later, Yoko.”
Hiyoko smiled as he hung up, then dialed Brian’s number.
He pressed the phone to his ear and waited for the flamboyant blond to pick up.
“Haaayy~,” Brian sung into the receiver once he had picked up, “hi my widdle nuggie baby! To what do I owe the pleasure of this late night call. It had better be the news I’m hoping for. BeyoncĂ©, I have P R A Y E D !”
“Uh, Bri… I think you might want to sit down for this one,” Hiyoko chuckled in warning.
“Oh…. oh lord…. BeyoncĂ©, I swear it on your perfection, Yoko-baby if you are PLAYING me right now I swear on her holiness I will never—,”
“We’re dating,” Hiyoko interjected.
Brian screamed so loud that Hiyoko had to yank the phone from his ear to prevent auditory damage then a barrage of words followed as Brian had a breakdown on the other end of the line.
Suddenly Anthony’s voice could be heard.
“Hello? Hiyoko? It’s Anthony.”
“Hi, uncle Anthony, I’m so sorry to call so late. I just wanted to let you know that Kana and I are dating. We made it official just a few hours ago.”
“Oh Hiyoko!” Anthony said proudly, “I’m so happy for you and Kana, congratulations. I can understand why Brian is having a moment, now.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean for it to cause such a stir,” Hiyoko apologized, still hearing Brian wailing with delight in the background, “is he going to be ok?” Hiyoko added with concern.
“He’ll be fine,” Anthony replied kindly, “please send our love and support to Kana as well. You’re both so special to us.”
“Thanks you so much, uncle Anthony,” Hiyoko replied, his heart full and happy at the love his family had for him and his- now- boyfriend, Kana, “I’ll pass the message on.”
After finishing up the call Hiyoko closed up the office and headed home. Ready to sleep after such a big night.
……………………….
“Brian. I did it,” Kana sent in text to his confidant.
“Honey baby, you brave man! Hiyoko called us earlier to tell us the FABULOUS news,” Brian sent back, “I will definitely be the designer for your wedding outfits and I have just recently finished my celebrant certification so, baby, I am now a qualified marriage officiate!”
“That is good news. Thank you for your offer,” Kana replied.
“I am SO happy for the two of you, kisses upon kisses for my favourite boys, mwah!” Brian replied, with no less than 50 red hearts following the message.
Kana smiled and closed his phone.
“What a day!” He thought internally in sign before falling into bed.
……………………………
The next morning Hiyoko flicked the TV on as he walked around bare foot in his black sweat pants, getting ready for work.
The flatscreen jumped to life and channel 6 news came on with a supposed ‘breaking news’ special.
“We have Tanji Shi, a sign language expert, with us this morning to give us the translation,” the news reporter announced, “Miss Shi, thank you for joining us this morning.”
Hiyoko paused his breakfast making and looked up at the TV just in time to see the snippet of footage of him landing on Kana’s car the night before and signing the words ‘I Love You’.
“Oh no…”
“Yes, good morning Hirosho Doushin,” the lady greeted respectfully, signing as she spoke.
“Miss Shi, I believe you are fluent in many of the sign languages, correct?” Mr Doushin asked.
“Yes,” she said and signed.
“Could you please tell us what the conversation is between these two well known Pro heroes- Condor and Seismic Kana?”
“Yes, of course,” she said and signed, “it appears that Seismic Kana, the pro hero in the car, is initially confused by the presence of someone on the roof of his vehicle. But then, as you can see, after using his quirk, quickly realizes who it is on his roof and pulls over; Auslan signing the words: “what are you doing?” to his friend. Hero Condor, after a pause, replies with the Auslan sign for ‘I love you’….”
“Miss Shi, what do you think this means? Is this a romantic gesture between the two heroes? Or is this a friendly exchange between two close friends?”
“Mr Doushin, judging by the reaction of Seismic Kana I would say, in my professional opinion, that it is a romantic gesture.”
“You heard it here first folks!” Mr Doushin said directly into the TV camera, “sign language expert, Miss Shi, has confirmed that heroes, Condor and Seismic Kana, are in a romantic relationship.”
“Maaaaaan,” Hiyoko groaned internally watching as he and Kana hugged on screen, “this has blown up real quick.”
He looked around for his phone and picked it up to text Kana but his boyfriend had already contacted him.
“Hiyoko, have you seen the news?” Kana texted.
“I just saw it,” Hiyoko replied, “what do you want to do, Kana? We’re going to get bombarded at work today.”
