Kami got up and made to walk to the classroom door, his heart still beating out of his chest.
The girl that had caught them was screaming her discovery across the school, Kami could hear her voice from inside the classroom and tears pricked at the corner of his eyes.
He was embarrassed.
Humiliated.
He didn’t want to be labeled as ‘gay’.
Shinsou approached him from behind and reached out to take his hand which Kami yanked away violently.
“No, dude, don’t touch me.” He said, voice quivering.
“Kami? What’s wrong?” Shin asked confused by the fear on Kami’s face.
“Nothing, ok?! Just go away.” Kami replied in a shakey voice, a single tear rolling down his cheek.
“Hey…” Shin said in a soothing voice, “don’t cry, it’s gonna be ok?”
“No! No, it’s not!” Kami cried, “I’m gonna get called names now, my mum and dad will yell at me and it’s all your fault!”
Shin’s eyes widened in disbelief. “W-Wait … but we are boyfriends? It’s not a bad thing to like each other? I’m here for you Denk, we have each othe—.”
“NO!” Kaminari cried again, backing away from Shin. “I DON’T WANT TO DO THIS ANYMORE!”
Shin reached a hand out to try and calm Kami but a bunch of male classmates ran up to them calling out to the blond.
“HEY GAYBOY!” They called in a jeering voice. “JUST HEARD YOU TWO WERE KISSING!”
“NO!!” Kami cried back in tears. “IT’S NOT TRUE!”
The boys laughed hysterically at the terrified Kami. “Look! He’s even crying little a sissy gay baby.” They teased.
*End Flashback*
Kami turned and ran, ignoring Shin’s desperate cries, running from the tauntingly cruel laughter that followed him down the hall.
When he was found, he was called to the principals office and sternly reprimanded for his ‘inappropriate’ behaviour. Shin was called in separately and reprimanded as well but he stood his ground and declared himself openly, coming out as proudly gay.
Kami’s parents grounded him, he wasn’t allowed to spend time with Shin, which, at this point, had no effect because Kami was embarrassed enough and didn’t want to see Shin anyway.
Their friendship basically terminated from that point.
Kami found it hard to make other friends because of the story that preceded him, none of the boys would play with him because they said they were scared he was going to try and kiss them and the girls already had their own clicks.
His grades suffered heavily and he went through a really dark patch, confused and alone.
Then he went to high school and he could start afresh with no backstory following him.
He made friends easily, he was accepted, he was free of his past- only his inner demons haunted him and he spent a lot of time going over what had happened between him and Shin.
Looking back, there were a lot of things he regretted. He threw a wonderful friendship away… for what?
He hurt his best friend when he should have stood up for him and been there for him.
He was guilt-ridden to the core.
He never saw Shin again once they started high school, that was almost 4 years ago now…
…………..…………….
Shinsou sighed as he lay there thinking about the past.
His parents weren’t happy at first about his announcement of being gay but he stuck to his guns and they had come to accept it. Not happily, but they were tolerant at least.
He wished things had gone differently with Kami as he had been super confused by Kami’s sudden change.
What had happened? He just wished he could talk to him again and sort things out…
Suddenly his phone dinged.
“Unknown number”
Curiously he opened it.
“Hey Shin, it’s Kami…”
The purple haired boy nearly passed out.
Kami had sent a short message something to the effects of “I know I hurt you. I can’t begin to apologize for my actions and I completely understand if you never want to hear from me again but I just needed to get it off my chest etc…”
Shin called the number straight away.
……….……………
Kami hit send, groaned, and face planted onto the bed.
“Man, what am I doing I’m still just as pussy as I was back then…”
Suddenly his phone vibrated in his hand. His head shot up and he looked at the screen.
“Incoming call- Shinsou.”
Kaminari made a noise that was something between a gasp and a scream. He didn’t know how to react.
Staring at the phone for a split second longer he hit answer call.
“H-hey.” He said nervously.
“KAMI!” Shin’s voice came strongly down the phone. “Dude! How are you? Can we talk?”
“Uh, y-yeah.” Kami replied coyly.
“Listen. I’m sorry about what happened back in primary school. I don’t know what I did wrong? I’m sorry for whatever I did!”
“No dude! It was me! You did nothing wrong!” Kami said, quickly correcting Shin.
The two boys chatted non stop for the next 4 hours, clearing up misunderstandings, apologizing and reminiscing the good times.
“Man, thanks so much for the call.” Kami said with a smile. “I feel so much better.”
“I’m glad, Denk, can…can we start over? I just want my best friend back.”
“Dude, that would be AWESOME!” Kaminari said enthusiastically. “Done deal! Besties again.”
“Sweet.” Shin said happily.
And that’s where they left it, saying goodbye and promising to be in contact tomorrow. Both boys falling asleep with light hearts and smiles on their faces.
…………
“DUDE!” Kaminari yelled down the phone to Kiri the next morning.
“What? What is it?” Kiri groaned groggily, groping for his watch to look at the time.
“SHINSOU CALLED ME YESTERDAY AND WE’RE FRIENDS AGAIN!” Kami screeched excitedly.
Kiri chuckled huskily. “That’s awesome, dude, I’m so happy.”
“Yeah, we’re catching up today! Wanna come? Bring your favourite gay bagel.” Kami said, the embodiment of excitement.
“Uhh, my gay bagel and Shin don’t see eye to eye unfortunately, they had a bit of a run in…”
“Ugh, don’t mind him. He doesn’t like anyone except you.” Kami said in a flat tone.
Kiri laughed. “Thanks for the compliment.”
“It’s fact, bro, but you’re welcome.” Kami chuckled. “I’ll text you where we’ll be and you can decide if you wanna come or not.”
“Awesome, thanks dude.” Kiri said, rolling onto his back. “I’m glad you guys are friends again though, that’s the most important thing to me.”
